As a second-year joiner to the School of Information Sciences & Technology, I have had many opportunities to contribute to development of the School's mission, priorities, and structure. My decision to join a start-up school as a junior faculty was purposeful; I am a designer and consider development of the School to be a design problem. I wanted to play a role in influencing the direction the School would take and therefore help define an integrative field of Information Science & Technology. I derive a great deal of satisfaction from having contributed to the School's development.

I continue to develop my program of service to the external academic community. I have served on an NSF review panel for the Advanced Learning Technologies (ALT) program and have since acted as an ad hoc reviewer for program proposals. Along with Dr. Carroll and Dr. Rosson, I organized and led a workshop on design knowledge management at the Hawaii Conference on System Sciences. I served the 2006 ACM conference on Designing Interactive Systems (DIS) as both a program committee member and as workshop chair. Along with Dr. Carroll and Dr. Sawyer, I led a track on Knowledge Management Reachback for the 2006, Third International Conference on Information Systems for Crisis Response and Management (ISCRAM). In 2007 and next year in 2008 I am serving on the program committee for the International Conference on Design Science Research (DESRIST). As noted above, through my Design Research seminar I initiated development of two workshops on Exploring Design as a Research Activity.
